Soot-sprites (also known as goblins, gremlins, or hommunculi) are a rare phenomena in which the viscous residues from arcanotech manufacturing processes become sentient and animated by the action of ambient magical engergies. The actual mechanics of this process are unknown - while several soot-sprites have been intensively studied by biologists and some general theories of their physical workings are known, no model exists which can explain their formation. Soot-sprites are relatively rare - while most documented cases of their formation have produced dozens or hundreds of individuals, most prefer to live within the pipework and sumps where they were born.
