Lasers are devices for emitting coherent electromagnetic radiation based on the principle of amplication through stimulated emission. Derivative systems using similar principles employing gravitational, strong, weak, and arcane fields exist separately, but are often referred to under the same name due to the ubiquity of hybrid-field systems and overlaps in function and application.

Lasers are an ancient technology, having been independently developed countless times over the course of Elyrion's history. Early lasers were prone to overheating, limited in frequency, and were often limited in power output; modern lasers use a variety of different optical and arcanic principles to improve performance, efficiency, and compactness.

Laser Derivative Systems

Following the successful application of laser principles to non-electromagnetic fields with the development of resonant arcane dynamics, a variety of hybrid-field lasers have emerged.

Aetheric Lasers

Fundamental to coherently resoarcane machines, aetheric lasers phase in and out of realspace at a rate determined by its frequency. In this way, they are capable of carrying information between Aetheric and realspace phenomena, and exhibit variations in speed key to measuring ambient realspace-Aether coupling - in essence, a waveform-dependent magic detector.

Pre-Silence aetheric lasers are known to have played roles in ley-line manipulation; presently, they are used in sensors and information technologies.

Common Laser Applications

Manufacturing

Infrared, visible-light, and ultraviolet lasers are ubiquitous in electronics manufacturing and fabrication processes for cutting, etching, and deposition

Information Technology

Laser scanning and spectroscopy are common tools, and lasers are vital to the operation of deep-space and fiber optic-based communication devices. Laser-based computation, while pioneered by many independent groups, is dominated primarily by aetheric lasers - if at least partially due to their relevance in artificial intelligence and theoarcane technologies.

Weaponry

Personal laser weapons are ubiquitous in Elyrion, coming in many different shapes and sizes. Common amongst them, however, is the tendency to employ vacuum UV so as to more easily penetrate materials; arcanoplasma-based X-ray lasers exist, but are prone to breakdowns when compared to their more reliable Pre-Silence counterparts.
